The inspiration came when we served as a student chaplain in a children's hospital back in 2000.
"I wanted to write a story about young people who were like many of those I had met in the hospital - who were funny, full of life and great fun to be around. "I also knew that I wanted The Fault in Our Stars to be a love story, but it wasn't clear to me for a long time what kind of love story it would be," he says.
A girl named Esther Earl provided the direction he needed for the story
Though Esther is not the model for a specific character in the book,Green notes that, "our friendship and the joy she had in her life were huge inspirations." Diagnosed with metastasized papillary thyroid cancer in 2006, Esther Grace Earl succumbed to the disease in 2010, at age 16. In Green's tumblr account he said, "I am so glad that I knew Esther, and that she was a nerdfighter, and that through Esther's family and This Star Won't Go Out we can still decrease suck with her. But I am also really pissed off that she died."

He was reluctant to sell the movie rights
Even before the novel was published, Hollywood came calling. But Green was reluctant to sell the movie rights. "I felt the story was so personal and close to me I just couldn't imagine it being turned into a movie."
But eventually, he's now "unambiguously happy." Why? "I like the people who are involved in this. They read the book with tremendous clarity and care, and they didn't respond to it by being like, "This will make a billion dollars and we'll all be rich," which was really refreshing."
Yes, he has a Tumblr account
His book is nothing but human is such a way that the charm mostly comes from it being realistic. But apart from anything else, the author himself is not exactly an untouchable "power" because, yes he has a tumblr account and he runs it. In his Tumblr Q&A part he writes,
"my tumblr is not run by assistant. Nor is my twitter or facebook or anything else.
My facebook, maybe someday.
BUT MY TUMBLR? Never."

The novelist was a regular presence in the shoot
According to the director, Josh Boone "John was terrific in helping us determine whether something was working," he shares, "He's not only a wonderful writer, he's a great audience."
